That angry, distant, even psychopathic God re-appears in St Paul and his theory of Jesus's sacrificial atonement, as Paul tries to make sense of the crucifixion and of the oral tradition that he must have learned from the disciples who were with Christ at Gethsemane that Jesus had consented to undergo crucifixion out of obedience — and only out of obedience — to a God who demanded it of him. How that squares with Hosea 6:6 or Isiah 1:11-17 is something I've never been able to fathom.
