all right we're dead maybe 2019 here at the duty booth with Andrew yeah Andrew thanks for a lot of fun good good you and it's pretty busy here – it is fortunately this year you gave us a little like quiet room and you've got some new products so I have had on on over on our channel we've had lots of excitement about deity Kinect yeah and you have some new things here to share with us today where do you want to start ok the slowest part of the lavaliers and will work to the bigger microphones so we've got w lava which just kind of been out for a little while now we have W lava Pro which is four millimeters so we've actually shaved 2 millimeters off the diameter and it's actually ip57 so that is roughly about the same as a lot of cell phones out there yeah so ip57 it's practically if you had a big bucket of water dunked on you not a big deal it's almost everything but shy of swimming with the thing right okay that's very similar to a lot of other lavalieres on the market so there's already a lot of accessories so as soon as you buy this log when we start shipping them you'll be able to buy accessories on day one start hiding it underneath clothing on day two so things like all their products yeah a lot of that the LM C's hi to Mike stuff we've been testing this morning we're trying to dial in some settings with them to find out how to make it even more snug and make suggestions for customers out there who like the high demmick products as well as some just foam windscreen kind of companies that make sure we're compatible with everything they might stew if you didn't stop there like so we make even something smaller called the the W lock micro this is three millimeters and unlike some other brands that claim three modes we're actually a dead three millimeters just perfect so we're actually smaller than a lot of other microphones on the market and again we've been working with the accessory makers to make sure that on day one when the ships that they will all the products here and that anybody we're actually showing off a few other accessories for this lavaliere excellent so and what I've noticed too here is the difference in the cables and so they're probably kind of different use cases for each of these you want to run through that yeah absolutely so W LOB's got more of a more durable more rugged kind of a cable it's also blacks if you need to show it on camera just pin it away show it on a lapel of a suit or anything like that it just disappears that's what really would cement for its ending ng kind of a love this one is meant for more if you need hide it under actors everyday use that's why we call it the pro it's waterproof it's everyday use got the durable cable and everything you really need for guys who are working day-in day-out and all sorts of situations and the micro it's got the most delicate of the lavalieres this is the special case scenarios where you need to hide it in this obscure piece of fabric it's obscured outfit and it's like where am I gonna put this we may have the most delicate with the most delicate wire in the most delicate housing but it's you got the exact same capsule as its bigger brother okay so so voicing as voicings gonna be nearly identical alright so this this if I I don't know you probably can't say this but I can say this so this reminds me of a countryman v6 in terms of size but this is like a cost 11 d if I had to guess so just for people that are wondering what the sizes are like in real life that's what I'm thinking about too so those are almost like accessories that you could say match this ok excellent so you could say I could say that but you couldn't say that so anyway now the next question is termination so who can which which systems can I use this with obviously dat connector but how are you how is this terminated and what are my options so every single lavalier we make is microdot along with our new headset which is also microdot so the idea is if you buy stuff you can grow with our system as well as if you start shifting brands and you say hey you know Andrew I like your daily connect but electro Sonics has got some really cool stuff I want to move over to let your Sonics you don't have to worry about all your lives having to go get Reacher made send them off to get serviced and everything just buy some new connectors for the electro Sonics you can make that migration a lot smoother I remember in my career I was a sennheiser user for a long time with the g3 s is some old g2 s and I started to move the electro Sonics and like half of my logs were one and half for another and if they got broke I was kind of out of luck or the connectors got broke so it's always nice to have logs that could just adapt with everyone who's in that moving situation where you may have one brand and you're moving to an they're helping that transition can always be helpful yeah now another challenge with that too is it sometimes those connectors are a little expensive did you guys have your own mic redundant that microdot adapters that our competitor compatible with other brands that use the micro technology it's an open-source at actually I think it originally was MIT for coax cables so we're using it for lavalieres ours are $29 if you need it for the 3.5 millimeter jack that's wired for standard for like sennheiser rodelink us as well as Sanel or if you need that was at the TA 5 adapter that's for like electro Sonics out there I think that's $39 and we also make one more at $39 that's for sure Wireless okay excellent excellent what are we looking like on availability and pricing for these can we talk that yet yes so we're talking about the W love and the W LA pro probably be about shipping in the next 45 days hopefully and then this guy were probably looking at about mid summer late summer all right now and also just to clarify for the connect system that is that shipping with this or a different mic that's actually shipping with a modified version of our V love with a lock-in 3.5 millimeter and that little smart box has been removed cool all right excellent so good news on yeah good news on the on the lavalier front so more options out there I'm excited to test them out and see how they sound absolutely right what else have you got I also have one more thing I've not shown we haven't even posted photos of this this is our new pencil mic we haven't even named this so right now it's just codenamed DD pencil mic okay so eventually hopefully we'll come up with some kind of really cool name so we've got an omnidirectional capsule they have a cardioid capsule we're currently in development of a hyper-cardioid kind of capsule so for those people who've been asking for daily to make an indoor boom mic we've been listening and we're gonna make this also match your uh smite twos so all that sound poised you love about the SMI two on access we're gonna give to these capsules so they can cut perfectly in post excellent so can I touch it absolutely right another thing that looks like you've put a low-cut filter in there which out in a low-cut because a lot of people that are doing indoor kind of work maybe around air conditioners they may be around you know rumbles and that kind of thing too happen indoors so we wanted to add that to our little microf excellent and this is this is a substantial piece here so it's short you know it's a short boom mic but it's it's fairly substantial what's it made out of it's actually made out of the same brass material as RS mic – so the brass properties allow us to be pretty much immune to RF so we wanted to carry that over to our indoor microphone I know a lot of pencil microphones on the market are made out of really really thin aluminum and they can be RF nightmares they can also be real susceptible to humidity so again all that kind of stuff we wanted to bring up from the estimate – into this pencil mic excellent well I hope you're the best I'm looking forward to a super super capsule for this and that's actually really cool that you can swap them out to having an omni if you're going to do some sort of you know even if you're gonna do music recording absolutely or if you want to get more of an Avianca sound a cardioid is really useful for voiceover and then having a super for a boom would be just what a dream yeah so we're going to again priceless very reasonable just like this mic tube was cool alright so later this year's will probably work over here yeah probably late summer kind of release on this we really want to make sure that hyper-cardioid is just spot-on excellent alright this is a lot yeah I feel like you talked about your concept over here just elephant in the room so one thing that we're asking a lot of people here at NAB is to ask us what they wanted in a studio microphone at the end of the day we ended up making a studio microphone and we thought we made a really good one yeah and then we started to do market analysis and realized we would be the concern of the luxury brand and I don't think anyone wants dat to be the luxury brand at the end of the day so what we wanted to do was come up with like the Ferrari of microphone features and then ask people here at NAB what they want in their pre us because we're gonna make something that is truly economical and really great and more reliable that you want to use every single day so we're asking people today what is it you guys want out there in a podcast microphone right now we've got something that's got different low cut filters six different pick up patterns gain knobs volume knobs USBC 5-pin XLR and a headphone jack but when we go to market and we actually make something like this probably about half these features are gonna go away just to make it a super affordable we're asking you guys out there on YouTube Facebook and here at NAB what features do you guys want to see from us can I say yeah what do you want to that I think USBC is output is really nice so if I need to be really lightweight and I'm gonna do an interview with somebody or I'm just you know like in the solo podcast so you're SBC is awesome some of the polar patterns are nice to have some options there so obviously cardioid to me seems like a no-brainer that means to be in there I'm not as convinced that Romney needs to be in there unless you're trying to move into the music world but I don't know if that's really your shtick oh I can play an instrument okay I can play the radio so for me that like the omni is not as important the figure of eight is interesting but I know how many people are doing that side recording yeah it could be interesting but I again not critical but but if you had like if you're gonna start with somewhere I just say cardioid is probably the most important thing having the the built-in analog to digital converter so you could just plug it right into a laptop or something would be cool we're on iPad and then some really good to have you know a decent headphone outputs you can monitor in real time I think that would do it it's a large diaphragm condenser that is a 35-millimeter dual diaphragm condenser okay so we may drop the dual side and just go with the cheaper capsule or that maybe it's a good place to start yeah and then if you find that you want to do something fancier like this at some point maybe that make sense – absolutely so those are unsolicited advice for the day SMI – how's it been going s mike – has been a hot seller for us but it's also been probably the number one people the number one product that people have been giving us feedback about a lot of people out there like we love the sound we love it we just want it to be a little bit lighter and we decided well let's go full lighter and also make it better for indoor use so I present the s might – s this is a microphone that we think is going to be another hot seller for all the SMI – people already out there you can start using your estimate – and your outdoors and then this could become your indoor microphone for a while until the hyper comes out but this is only three ounces it comes in I think you're like 80 89 grams so I'm like that for all of the people out there in Europe in the rest of the world outside of America this microphone super lightweight also made out of that same brass material so it's got the same resistance it's also got the same capsules yes Mike – so they'll cut together we're really trying to put together this family of microphones so that when you invest into the estimate two of the s might to ask or what essentially may end up becoming the s makes you pencil figure it out yeah whenever you guys get into this kind of family all your microphones come together okay we think that it's important that just launching a new microphone that's a different size different weight isn't enough it's also got to make sure that to the owners of our other products they all kind of sound the same so that when you're out there shooting you don't even to do a lot of dialogue at any impose kind of match tones of different voices okay so so this one you could see you surf with this one indoors right we're going to write up again which is a challenge with shotguns even short shotguns or mediums I guess medium shot yes yes yeah we all call that other one the short shotgun but that's an actual dishwasher that's a short shotgun okay so in the light of the fact that it is shorter what does that do to be overall like specifications of the tronic sure so the actual interference tube is only actually about two maybe two and a half inches long so that's actually gonna help with your reverberations in the room that's gonna help with that kind of hard reflections that you get but it kind of been a hassle for a lot of shotgun owners out there they'll hear interesting weird and phasing issues because of all those reflections so a shorter tube ends up mean a better sound more importantly also it means a slightly wider pickup so less low bar a little bit more super so if you're booming people with a multi-person scene and they're starting to ad-lib some lines and you're sitting there going oh my goodness I'm back and forth back and forth you're not gonna sit there and stress as much much slower and because of that the cones a little bit wider it's a little bit more forgiving to people they're just starting out too all right what is pricing and availability I'm not when looking like this is almost gonna be the exact same price as the normal s mic – and we're looking for about a mid summer release cool Andrew thank you so much you guys are killing it out there keep it up

  1. I would like to see some of the microphone manufacturers would bring a high quality (active with plug-in-power supply), low noise microphone attenuator for matching lavalier microphones and video cameras with hot microphone input together. I hope Deity for instance could catch this.

  2. So I recommend Diety to my camera friends that do not work in a proper professional world. Like most things…Zoom, Rode and Diety…as a sound guy, “can I replace you with that new tracking camera OR should I undercut your kit with my new Blackmagic camera?”

  3. Hello sir… i need a mic for small short movies production.. currently im using rode videomicro the smallest version of rode mics. I record dialouges with a distance of 1 to 8 feets. Record different sound effects etc.. i want to ask u sir.. what type of mic will be best for me.. rode shotgun mics or zoom h 1n or any other brand. I dont want much surrounding noise in my audios and dialogues with natural pitch and base.. i can trust u blindly when things come to sound.. what will u suggest me sir ? Thank you

  4. Great vid Curtis! Request: Can you please teach us the ways of recording stereo ambience on set? Which microphones to use? Pros and cons of x/y pattern for doing so. There's very little resources on the web after an exhaustive search.

  5. Well, my immediate reaction is that, except for the very first one, all these mics would be a lighting nightmare, so I would never buy any of them, which makes the rest of it quite irrelevant.

  6. Curtis, your studio mic feedback was exactly what I would buy. Usb-c, and 3-pin xlr, with a gain knob and headphone jack. Cardioid is all I need 99% of the time!

Only thing I would add is that a low size/weight is appreciated. I want it easily packable if it's going to be so convenient with the USB/xlr versatility.
